First impression

Bluehost was founded way back in 2003 by Matt Heaton and Danny Ashworth in Provo, Utah, and has since cemented itself as a major player when it comes to Shared Hosting and WordPress Hosting. They embrace solutions for open-source implementation and development and are even endorsed by WordPress as a recommended hosting provider, a feat rarely seen. This market leader, consisting of more than 750 dedicated and skilled administrators, engineers, and technicians, powers more than 2 million websites across the globe and is one of the most loved and trusted Hosting solution providers around. Besides the aforementioned services, they also offer VPS Hosting, Dedicated Server Hosting & Reseller Hosting.

Their best-in-class, hassle-free solutions are reasonably priced and designed to meet the needs of a wide range of customers, from newbies right through to seasoned pros. They also make onboarding a breeze, all packages come standard with tools that are simple and easy to use, and their setup wizard will guide you through the setup process to help you launch your site in no time!

A Brief Video Introduction from Bluehost Company

Trial Period

There is no free trial on offer to test drive their services, but rather a 30-day money-back guarantee, which is standard practice these days for any quality hosting company worth their salt.

Billing Cycle

With Bluehost, you will have the option to sign-up on either a month-to-month basis or pay annually, this applies to all their packages. One should note that you will be required to take the annual option when first joining, and only when your plan comes up for renewal will you have the option of paying monthly. Personally the annual options make much more sense as these are incentivized by huge discounts. Bluehost accepts all major credit cards or PayPal as payment methods.

Control Panel

Users can manage their files through the ever-popular and easy-to-use cPanel.

Limits

Bluehost offers four plans on their Shared Hosting, namely Basic, Plus, Choice Plus, and Pro, with the biggest difference being the allocated disc space. The Basic Package starts with a mere 10GB SSD Storage (very little compared to most competitors), the Plus Package comes with 20GB, Choice Plus 40GB, and lastly, 100GB for the Pro Package. All come standard with a Free SSL certificate, Free Domain, and Free Content Delivery Network (CDN). On the higher-end packages, you will also have a few value-added services like Domain Privacy and Performance Insights.

One should note that the SSL on the Basic Package is only free for the first year.

2-thumb.png

Their VPS Hosting offers three choices, starting with 30GB SSD space, 2 GB RAM on the Standard Package, 60GB space and 4GB RAM on the Enhanced, and 120GB space with 8GB RAM on the Ultimate Package. The first two will also have 2 Core CPUs while the Ultimate Package has 4.

Security

Their all-in-one solutions make website protection and reliability easy with a free SSL through Let’s Encrypt that is automatically assigned to all domains, free basic malware detection, and automated security updates.

Should you need more protection, Bluehost also has a paid service called SiteLock. It is their product and comes with varying levels of protection.

3-thumb.png

The essential plan is charged at $7.99 per month and will only scan website files. The Prevent plan scans all files, as well as the database, and this will set you back $19.99 per month. Lastly, they have the PreventPlus plan for $29.99 per month which includes all of the above, and also provides an Advanced Security Firewall.

OS

Bluehost only offers Linux-based Hosting.

Support

Around-the-clock help is available via phone, email, or live chat.

Bluehost is famous for its "excellent support". I put them to the test and sadly was rather disappointed. I would rate them as average at best. Their online chat representatives disappear at times, leaving you to ponder if you are still connected, and although I eventually got the technical answers I was after, this was still a far cry from superior support.

Is Bluehost suitable for my company?

Who might benefit from Bluehost?

WordPress users: Bluehost is actually officially recommended by WordPress.org, and they offer several attractive features for WordPress users, including one-click installs and automatic updates.

Beginners: Bluehost is known for its user-friendly interface and excellent customer service, including 24/7 support. This can make it a great choice for those who are new to web hosting.

Small to medium-sized businesses: Bluehost's shared hosting plans are competitively priced and offer a good range of features, making them suitable for smaller businesses. They also offer more advanced options, such as VPS and dedicated hosting, for when your business grows.

Who might not benefit from Bluehost?

Budget-conscious users: While Bluehost offers a good value for the price, there are cheaper hosting options available. Those with a very tight budget might prefer to look elsewhere.

High-traffic sites: While Bluehost's shared hosting is excellent for smaller sites, it might not be sufficient for sites with very high traffic or resource-intensive applications. In these cases, a cloud hosting or dedicated server might be a better choice, though Bluehost does offer these options as well.

Users needing advanced features: While Bluehost is great for beginners and intermediate users, some advanced users might find it lacks certain features they need. For instance, it doesn't offer hosting based on the Windows operating system and might lack certain developer-friendly tools.

Conclusion

👍 Pros 👎 Cons
  • Free Domain;
  • Free CDN (Content Delivery Network);
  • Free SSL;
  • Affordable;
  • Money Back Guarantee.
  • Lack of Windows options;
  • Only one option for Control Panel;
  • Average Support.

Bluehost offers feature-packed, dependable Hosting that is perfect for anyone starting out. They noticeably lack Windows Hosting options, and the support might feel average at times, but overall still a great hosting choice, especially for users that are budget conscious.

Arek HBluehost turned out OK for business sites and small ecommerce websites from my experience, but trying to use anything else than WordPress has always been a challenge at least for me. As with many shared hosting accounts, there was also a problem with cron jobs to run more often that every 30 minutes (I believe now 15), so whether it's Mautic or Magento 2, it is difficult to install it on Bluehost. Additionally, Bluehost uses heavily modified cPanel that almost does not resemble the original thing at all, and with domain and DNS management in a separate portion of the customer panel. Overall, good entry level offering for Word Press hosting but not so much for anything else.Gurpal SinghI am using bluehost shared hosting from last 7 years for my company. I opted it because of the price discount they provided me initially. After using their services, I opted to continue on the membership renewal year and years are gone and I am still using the same, without any issues. I recommend to use it if want to hassle free services.Vladyslav StrebkovTheir support is even worse than the quality of their services. I had the misfortune of trying to host a static HTML+CSS+JS website on this hosting, and encountered a problem I've never seen in 12 years of website development experience: some images wouldn't load with a 500 error, and different images had this error each time. I wrote to support, and the first agent behaved completely unprofessionally: tried to say it was a developer error, that it was a problem with my DNS settings, etc. When I told him for the 5th time that a 500 error is a server error, he just abandoned the conversation and said he was glad he could help. The next day I contacted support again, and this time had an identical experience. For about 40 minutes, an agent named Shamanth went in circles asking irrelevant questions for this problem, and in the end... simply closed the conversation and... said he was glad he could help. I wrote for the third time requesting punishment for agent Shamanth, but the next agent only pretended to do it without providing any proof. This is a horrible experience that I don't recommend anyone repeat. This company shouldn't earn any money.Ahmed SalahEldein HamzaMy most bad experience I booked hosting on October 7, 2024 After 24 hours, I found my account not working with the company. I checked my site and found the site working without a problem. I thought it was a technical problem. I tried to log in to my account again on October 9 and found the same problem, but I added that the site was no longer working at all For more than three days, my site is not working. My account with the company is not working. Whenever I contact technical support, they respond with canned responses. We are working to solve the problem. They will contact you soon. So far, the problem has not been solved at all. Every day, my site is down, which is equivalent to a financial loss. They deal with it coldly. I do not advise anyone, even a beginner, to deal with them So far, my site is not working. I ignore and deal slowly with their technical support service, as well as leaking my private data by the company, as I find many after booking hosting. They contact me via email and under the name registered with their company to provide SEO, design, and other services, which is something that violates privacy I think that if there is a negative rating or less than zero, they will deserveLA StevensI signed on with BlueHost in 2004 (a year after they opened). They were not yet with EIG and their service was AMAZING! I once called in for support on Christmas morning at 1:30 a.m., and they answered my call and fixed my problem in one call. Then they sold to EIG and that was the beginning of a downhill slide that has made them, in my opinion, unusable. If you haven't yet experienced what I am about to describe, it's probably coming.So recently BlueHost has begun shutting down websites because, supposedly, the sites have infected files. After the site is shut down, the owner calls support in a panic and they are told that they have infected files and that the files must be cleaned before the site is turned back on. Then they tell site owners that they can have someone call them back who will help them quickly clean up their site and get it back up. Panicked site owners just want their site up so they agree. Then, a third-party (SiteLock) calls the panicked site owner and tries to sell them their SiteLock service. The prices often start at around $1000. Then, if you don't agree, they drop the price to about $700. And if that's too much, they might make you a $300 offer. Many people have described this experience online. I had this experience recently. My site was down. I called BlueHost. But here is where my experience differs from some others. I was told by support that I would need to restore my site from an earlier backup. Infected files weren't mentioned, initially. I have a very large site account so the restore took more than a day. My site was down for two days at this point. Once restored, the site still wasn't up. So I called support again. This is when I was told I had infected files (why didn't they tell me this to start?). This is when I was told that I could have someone call me who would fix my site. At first they never identified that this would be their third-party vendor - SiteLock - calling me. When I asked what department would be calling me (and asked if I could call them instead), I was told this would be SiteLock, a third-party vendor. I said, "Oh, I'll call them." They told me I didn't have the service. I told them I did and pulled up an old invoice showing I paid $95.88 per year/$7.99 per month. They said I'd last paid in 2019. I proved that wasn't true with a paid invoice. Then they said it was 2021 that SiteLock was cancelled. I asked them to pull up approval for that cancellation (I'm the only contact and I knew I hadn't cancelled it). Then they told me, "...it wasn't paid for that year." I told them I auto pay, so, if it wasn't "...paid for" then it was because they hadn't charged for it.Here is what I think is happening: the $95.88 per year they charge is dropped from your account. They "find" infected files on your site at some later time. Site owner then learns they have no SIteLock. And, now that they have "infected" files, SiteLock can charge MORE to come in and rescue their site. It was my choice to NOT submit to what seemed like a SCAM to me. So, I went in and scanned every file (multiple times, using multiple services and MD5 hashes on each file). I found that of the 27 files that the SiteLock scan identified as suspicious, VirusTotal returned that only ONE file triggered two of their 59 checks. And even those only returned a 'suspicious' rating. Okay, so the other 26 files all returned clean. Nevertheless, I removed any of those 27 files that weren't essential to the site. That included the ONE file that triggered as possibly suspicious. I reported to BlueHost (which no longer takes tickets for tech support), that the remaining 26 files were FALSE POSITIVES. I told them they needed to report this to SiteLock. My site was still down for another four days until someone looked at the VOLUME of proof I provided (screen captures of ALL my work) and turned my site back on.All this time, I was working with support who didn't understand (or admit to understanding) the issue and they blatantly didn't care my site was down for SIX days. They mislead me on why my site was down which cost me two days of delay. THEN they delayed looking over my proof of work done and false positives for another four days. They know how vital a down site is. They claimed, too, that my issue was escalated. Yet it still took another four days to get my site up after this work was done. If that's escalated service, I pity anyone whose problems aren't escalated.Outside of this issue (which others have been experiencing since at least 2017), I had no issue in staying with BlueHost - despite their support going completely downhill. Their prices continued to rise, too. But, I stayed because the problems weren't catastrophic. But, if you were asking my advice, I'd say don't use BlueHost or any of their EIG/NewFold companies. And, if you're with them - move quickly before what has happened to me (and many others) happens to you.By the way, these are MY opinions and experiences. I have PROOF of what I have recounted here. If you'd like it, reach out. My opinions and experiences don't reflect those of HOSTINGS.INFO.Muhammad Suhail AjmalI opted for Bluehost primarily because it was the top-rated hosting service for WordPress at that time. Its cpanel is full of features; perhaps they are more than enough for a novice. Price-wise, it wasn’t a cheap hosting service, but as I said, it has the most comprehensive cpanel, which is especially helpful for business clients.The support isn’t very impressive because the resolution couldn’t come as quickly as I expected whenever I had an issue. Also, the support team tells you to do this and that and does not resolve your issue themselves. I moved to Namecheap because it was cheaper than Bluehost, and I do not regret it. Namecheap support is also a lot better than Bluehost.Bhavin JoshiBluehost.com is one of the worst hosting providers. They are unreliable, cheating people. I lost my entire website which is was 6 years of user data! When I asked them to help with recovery they asked me to pay ransom money. Never ever host with bluehost.com!!Mohit KumarI have used Bluehost for my international wordpress clients. It was an easy one click installation of wordpress and easy to use. They also provide free SSL certificate and CDN service for better performance of the website. I will recommend Bluehost for wordpress hosting.Muhammad AnsI would love to say without any personal interest Bluehost is the best ever hosting I have used so far. Their pricing plan is affordable enough with amazing features and functionalities. They have the best server uptime and support system as well.I have been recommending this to all my clients so they can enjoy best speed optimization for their website.Foivos OikonomouBluehost is one of the best options for a budget-friendly web hosting and they also offer special web hosting services for Wordpress as well. Moreover, whenever I needed their support they were more than OK (speed-wise) for solving me some minor issues.However, their speed can be an issue at times. Sometimes it's OK, others it's very slow. They must have many clients under the same server.Overall, I would recommend Bluehost for a budget-friendly web hosting but if you want a well optimized website with lightning loading speeds, maybe you should look somewhere else.Alejandro Quijano GarcíaRight now I´m working with this provider for one of my clients. They had already bought a plan with them and I was forced to work with it. I have get a very pleasant surprise because all the setup was very easy, WordPress installs almost automatically. Add a second or more domain to a hosting plan is a little tricky, but the support team is there for you when is needed.I´m running multiple sites under the same hosting account, every one runs smooth and fast. It was a surprise the loading times I could get with this hosting in PC and even on Mobile.The platform is friendly and almost everyone can understand what's going on. They bring easy access to the Cpanel in case you need more customization.The initial price is right, but the renewal is a little pricey. I think you can get a better deal by buying a plan for several years. One of their biggest pros is the free SSL, free CDN, and other useful stuff. They try to sell you a lot of add-ons and additional services. Is fair to say they offer them in a clear and respectful way.This is a very good option for beginners and advanced users, low and high traffic sites, big and small business.Sean ClaytonWith BlueHost you really know what you're getting. Are they the fastest hosting provider out there? Definitely not. But that's not what they're about.You get low cost hosting, which is reliable and stable. I was also really surprised by the quality of the support considering their price point!Most of their hosting plans offer unlimited websites which is great for someone looking to test out a few different business ideas whilst keeping your costs down as much as possible.
