OVHCloud VPS

OVH Dedicated Server

First impression

OVHCloud is a French-based hosting superpower that was established in November 1999 by Octave Klaba, a student at the time, with the help of three of his family members. The company grew rapidly and in 2004 expanded its operations to Poland and Spain, right about the time they moved their headquarters to Roubaix in the north of France. Things just escalated from there and it wasn’t long before they opened offices in Germany, Italy, Portugal, United Kingdom, Netherlands, and Ireland, and in 2019 they became the largest hosting provider in Europe and the third largest in the world based on physical servers.

They currently provide Domain Registrations, Shared Hosting, VPS Hosting, and Dedicated Servers, and operate 30 data centers that span 19 countries, from where they serve their ever-growing customer base of over 1 million.

Trial Period

In today's hosting landscape, only a handful of providers extend free trial periods to assess their services. However, most providers typically offer a money-back guarantee.

Much to my disappointment, OVHCloud does not provide either option. Should you feel the need to cancel their services, there is unfortunately no refund on offer.

Billing Cycle

OVHCloud provides its customers with the flexibility of monthly payments for Shared Hosting, despite it being an annual commitment. However, for VPS plans, customers are required to commit to either 12 or 24 months. They currently accept Cheques, all major Credit and Debit Cards, PayPal, Postal Order (Money order), and Bank transfers as valid payment methods.

Control Panel

OVHCloud offers their own custom built and feature rich control panel, simply named the OVHCloud Control Panel, on their Shared Hosting plans. Personally, I find this to be  extremely user friendly and a much better UI than cPanel. Users can manage all aspects of their website, like DNS, Databases, Emails, CMS installations, SSL Certificates and more, from one convenient location.

Their VPS and Dedicated Server plans offer cPanel for Linux based servers and Plesk for Windows.

Limits

Their Linux-based Shared Hosting offers four distinct plans: Starter Hosting, Personal Hosting, Professional Hosting, and Performance Hosting. The Starter plan includes 1GB SSD storage space, 2x 1GB email accounts, and 1x 250GB MySQL database. Personal Hosting provides 100GB SSD space, 10x 1GB email accounts, and 1x 500GB MySQL database. Professional Hosting offers 250GB SSD space, 100x 1GB email accounts, and 4x 500GB MySQL databases. The Performance plan is unique as it does not share computing power and RAM (Shared Server Environment). It features 500GB SSD space, 8 vCore CPUs, 16 GB RAM, 4x 1GB MySQL databases, and supports up to 1000x 1GB email accounts.

2-thumb.png

All Shared plans include a Free Let's Encrypt SSL, Automatic Daily Backups, and support HTML, CSS, and JS coding languages on static sites, as well as PHP on dynamic sites.

Their VPS plans are available in five options: Starter, Value, Essential, Comfort, and Elite. These plans range from 1vCore CPU, 2GB RAM, 20GB SATA SSD space, and 100Mbps unmetered bandwidth in the entry-level plan to 8vCore CPU, 32GB RAM, 640GB NVMe SSD space, and 2GBps unmetered bandwidth in their top-tier plan.

Website Builder

OVHCloud doesn’t offer a website builder on their hosting plans, however, clients can install a content management system (CMS), such as WordPress, PrestaShop, Drupal, or Joomla, with a single click, from where they can access all the tools necessary to create a professional website quickly.

Security

OVHCloud maintains complete control over the physical security measures within their data centers as they are the sole operators. Building access is strictly regulated and limited, adhering to the most stringent standards and requirements to guarantee optimal site security alongside continuous 24/7 video surveillance to exercise comprehensive control over each site.

They offer various levels of protection on network and server levels, ensuring their infrastructure is as secure as possible from hackers, and even offer additional protection for applications such as gaming.

By default, every OVHcloud product is protected from DDoS (distributed denial-of-service) attacks with a proven capacity to mitigate attacks up to 1.3 Tbit/s in size, whilst their Gaming DDoS protection safeguards applications from more sophisticated attacks. All domains are also protected with DNSSEC, to strengthen authentication in DNS using digital signatures based on public key cryptography. These include Secure DNS and Protection against Cache Poisoning / DNS Spoofing, a technique that fools a DNS server into thinking that it has received a valid and authentic response to a request.

All hosting packages come standard with a Free SSL certificate by Let’s Encrypt, but clients also have the option of installing Sectigo EV SSL Certificates at an additional cost (an EV certificate is the highest level of SSL certificates), for enhanced site protection. These come in 2 options, Advanced and Enterprise. The Advanced certificate includes Anti-DDoS, Metrics (1 month included), Load Balancing, and a Dedicated IP address, whilst the Enterprise features L7 Anti-DDoS protection, Metrics (1 year included), Load Balancing, a Dedicated IP address.

For an additional layer of protection, 2FA (2-factor Authentication) can also be enabled on all accounts.

OS

For Shared Hosting, OVHCloud utilizes the Debian GNU/Linux 8 (Jessie) Operating System (OS), a Linux distribution consisting of free and open-source software.

In their VPS and Dedicated Server plans, OVHCloud offers a diverse range of Operating Systems to choose from, including AlmaLinux 8 & 9, CentOS 7, Debian 10, 11 & 12, Fedora 37 & 38, Rocky Linux 8 & 9, Ubuntu 18.04, 20.04, 21.04, 22.04 & 23.04. Additionally, for Windows, they provide options such as Windows Server 2016 Standard, Windows Server 2019 Standard, and Windows Server 2022 Standard.

Support

They provide free standard support, Monday to Friday, from 08:00 to 18:00, via a Ticketing System, Telephone, and Online Chat. Should you be after 24/7 support, you can sign up for Business or Enterprise support at an additional, rather costly monthly fee.

OVHCloud has a lot going for them, but unfortunately, their standard customer support isn’t one of them. They are painstakingly slow to respond to even basic questions, even the sales department doesn’t seem too eager to sign one up. If you get stuck with an error, don’t hold your breath, as it might take some time to get assisted. Maybe it was just my experience and maybe bigger clients are treated differently, but this is one area they are not performing as I expected.

Conclusion

Pros Cons
  • Fast & Secure Hosting;
  • Scalable plans.
  • No Money-Back Guarantee;
  • Standard Support Agents are Slow to Respond.

OVHCloud offers fast, secure, and scalable hosting but they don’t perform well when it comes to their standard support and there are numerous complaints online about their server uptime, although I personally have not encountered this issue. It appears that their target audience is medium to large companies, as the expense associated with decent, reliable support might be too costly for startups and small businesses.

Elizaveta KudelyaWe hosted one project there, we wanted to test their firewall, and see what anti-DDoS settings there are here.An unpleasant surprise was that backups are created for several hours (about 6 hours), and according to support answer - this is the ordinary situation. Now I do not remember how long it was taking support to answer, but I think it wasn't fast. The firewall was analogous to iptables on the external perimeter of the network, even up to the serverAnti-DDoS we didn't check.Chamith SoyzaI've been using OVH for my website hosting needs for the past year, and I'm generally happy with the service they provide. One of the things that attracted me to OVH was their competitive pricing, and I was able to find a hosting plan that fit my budget.I've also been impressed with the performance of my website since I switched to OVH. My website loads quickly, and I've experienced minimal downtime, which is critical for my business. While OVH's customer support is generally good, I did have some issues with their response times. When I contacted them via email, it took them a few hours to respond, which was frustrating. However, I was able to resolve the issue quickly once I got in touch with a representative. One of the things that I find challenging about OVH is its control panel, which can be complicated to navigate. It took me some time to figure out how to manage my hosting account, and I'm still not entirely comfortable using it.While there are some issues with their control panel and customer support, the performance of my website and their affordable pricing make up for it.Arek HukalowiczBeen using their VPS service for a while and it was unbeatable for price, average for speed and with horrible customer support. The most egregious example was when customer support suspended newly opened business account (that purchased dedicated hosting already) and demanded a ton of personal information, including - but not limited to, copies of ID and copies of bank account statements of the company owner! This is against all and any privacy regulations in EU. OVH has no business asking for these and thy basically ran away with customer's money!Diolis Sulajovh.com was the first vps for me.Of course I would prefer a real and fast support when it comes to clients I was hosting.Supporti te dobet, cheap price, but i would never recommend it.Every month vps was offline for at least 2 or 3 days as support told us they had bandwidth problems.Support sent us emails after 2-3 days, which hindered our work progress.Konstantin RWorst experience for 20 yearsVery slow account control panel. After clicking on the link, you can wait 30-40 seconds until the page you need opens. There are no links in the control panel other than "Pay money" and "Restart server". All other links to the control panel should be searched in e-mail. If you have lost access to email, then account recovery is impossible. I tried to solve the problem through tech support. But when I click the "Recover password" link, nothing happens. The account control panel, in my opinion, was created by schoolchildren who do not know what UI/UX are. After paying for the server, I spent two hours trying to figure out where the control panel is located in my account, but I didn't understand until I wrote to technical support. I have 20 years experience web-building. When you receive answers to tickets, get ready for the fact that there are no links in the letter to the ticket, and in order to get into the ticket zone, you need to look for a username and password in your mail. I wrote two tickets with a difference of 18 hours between them. Looking by the numbering, over 2,000 tickets were sent by other users of this hosting in 18 hours. I paid for a server in Singapore, but instead they set up a server in Canada. When I asked for a refund because I didn't need a server in Canada, they said they saw no reason to return the money.Foivos OikonomouLet's just start with the fact that I used to have a VPS and a simple web hosting account on OVH. That was some 2-3 years ago so some things might have changed. Budget-wise they are one of the most affordable web hosting providers out there, but not without its faults. Their speed is OK, especially for their pricing. Nothing fancy but you'll do your job just fine.My main concern is with their technical support team. It takes them a while to answer back and most of the times they couldn't answer my questions.Other than that, you should be very careful to chose the right plan because you'll get many restrictions. For example, their most affordable hosting plan goes for €1.99/mo with 100GB storage and up to 5 websites. Seems like a true steal at first but then they mentioning that they only allow 1 SQL database up to 200MB. This is more than OK for a website (but not for 5!). Overall, I would recommend them for their pricing plans and for good speed.Phil RobinsWe used OVH for a UK based customer who required a hosting company where the servers we held in the UK. We purchased a dedicated server to host their website and web applications. With servers hosted across 4 continents, OVH is the host I would go to where data residency is important for document storage applications. While not the cheapest, the service was great and I would definitely use them again for Enterprise grade customers looking for dedicated server hosting.Jordan JI don't think you can actually get more budget than OVH in terms of price, they're extremely cheap at a couple of quid a month! But this does include an annual commitment. You're limited on features such as domains (websites) and email accounts, but that's to be expected for the price. You do get a wealth of storage with the base package including 100 GB. On the 3 cheaper packages the storage is HDD, which in the current market is very slow compared to commonly used SSD storage at most providers. I'd say OVH is great for small personal websites, with good uptime. But I would personally use them again for anything intended to be optimised for speed. such as CMS powered websites. The support is also non-existentDanilo AbreuMy experience with OVH was from 2016 to 2018 where I hosted my private website with them, they provided a reliable service, offered me several tools to protect my website from malicious people / software. Their price was below my budget (cheap), when I asked to change the location of my servers from Europe to America they did it directly, when I needed to scale my services I did it without any problem, their support was good enough to feel comfortable when I needed that support. I strongly recommend their services if you are looking for cheap but reasonable web hosting.Hayden SweetI am currently using OVH for hosting my own websites for my clients and i must say its just PERFECT. Not only is it extremely good on price its very fast and the support is second to none. I have never had any issues with the VPS i have and in the past i have used dedicated servers and load balancing packages and its very good.Deep KaurI have been using OVH hosting for around six months and my experience has been great up till now. The best thing about the services is the unlimited monthly traffic and SSL certificate feature that the company provides. I took the individual plan of hosting to try out the service and I was really impressed with what I got. There was no downtime in the services and I got more than what I expected. Due to this, I upgraded my plan to a performance plan for my 10 websites. Although, with that plan, they provide support for hosting around 500 websites at one time. Some of the features that I got free with it were a Free SSL certificate, Daily backup of files and restoration, and 99.9% uptime. I have had a very good experience till and now would suggest that if you are looking to host multiple websites at one time, then this will be the perfect hosting service for you.Scott BlaydesWorked with OVH through a client who has ~24 OVH servers. Wasn't expecting much from OVH, but the servers have had good reasonable speeds and been stable. When we have had problems, the OVH support staff quickly resolves the issue and most times, before we even submit a ticket. The options for the datacenter for the dedicated servers is also an asset for this project.
