Hetzner VPS

First impression

Hetzner Online GmbH, which is named after its founder Martin Hetzner, is a web hosting service provider company from Germany that started operations in 1997 in Gunzenhausen, Germany. The leading hosting firm, which is well known for its high technology, affordable price, and expert support, owns and operates its own high-tech data centers in Nuremberg and Falkenstein (both Germany), one in Helsinki, Finland, and two in the USA in Ashburn, Virginia and Hillsboro, Oregon. They provide Shared Hosting, Dedicated Server Hosting, VPS Hosting, Domain Registrations, and SSL certificates to clients globally.

Trial Period

They don't have a free trial to try out their services, and because their plans are monthly, they don't have a money-back guarantee either.

Billing Cycle

Hetzner hosting agreements are month-to-month and you must know that you need to provide 30 days' notice in case you would like to end services.

They take Bank transfer, all major Credit Cards, PayPal, and SEPA direct debit for SEPA country accounts as payment.

Control Panel

They provide their own custom control panel, the konsoleH, with all their hosting plans. The graphical client interface provides simple administration tools to the clients. It allows one to create and install accounts, order domains, handle DNS, install MySQL or PostgreSQL databases, display account statistics, etc., simply and instantly. I've been using this control panel for many years and can attest to the quality.

Limits

Hetzner Shared Hosting plans are available in 4 options, namely Level 1, Level 4, Level 9, and Level 19. The most basic plan already has a whopping 10GB NVMe SSD disc space, 50 subdomains, 100x POP/IMAP mailboxes, and 1x MySQL/PostgreSQL database – perfect for beginners!

Their Level 4 package offers 50GB NVMe SSD disk space, 400 subdomains, 200x POP/IMAP mail accounts, and 10x MySQL/PostgreSQL databases, while the Level 9 packages offer 100GB NVMe SSD disk space, 800 subdomains (I am not sure who will require that many), 300x POP/IMAP mail accounts, and 20x MySQL/PostgreSQL databases.

Last but not least, they provide Level 19 with 300GB of super-speed NVMe disk space and unlimited POP/IMAP mailboxes and MySQL/PostgreSQL databases.

All Shared Hosting packages come with a free SSL certificate, unlimited traffic, and 14-day rolling backups as standard.

Their VPS plans offer customers 5 high-performance and scalable plans to choose from, ranging from 200GB NVMe SSD storage, 4x vCores CPU, and 16GB RAM on their most basic plan, the VSERVER MC30, to 2 x 1,92 TB NVMe SSD storage, 1x AMD EPYC™7502P 32-Core "Rome" (Zen2) CPU, and 256 GB DDR4 ECC RAM on their top plan, the MA200.

One must note however that root access is not granted on their VPS plans.

Website Builder

The sad part, though, is that Hetzner does not have a site builder as an add-on option in their offerings. They do offer a WordPress Installer in their KonsoleH control panel, though. It can then be easily installed through a couple of clicks and will allow users access to all that is needed in order to develop a professional-sounding website without difficulty.

Security

Hetzner data centers are certified with ISO/IEC 27001, the global information security management system standard, and are continuously 24/7 monitored. Their servers and hosting packages are secured under robust protection features, like a Network Application Firewall (WAF) to secure web applications, websites, servers, and IT infrastructure against DDoS (distributed denial-of-service) attacks. They also have security features like automated Anti-Spam filtering with customizable settings which have adjustable levels of spam filter, configurable blacklist and whitelist, dynamic grey-listing, and dynamic blacklisting (RBL). They also offer Anti-Virus protection with ClamAV integration.

Also, each plan has an add-on to include either a free Symantec Basic SSL or Let's Encrypt SSL certificate.

OS

Their Shared and VPS plans run on the Linux operating system, which is most famously known for open-source and community development. They also use the LAMP stack, an acronym for a popular software stack consisting of Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP. It is so prevalent among web hosts due to its high flexibility and stability.

Support

They provide 24/7 phone support (Monday to Friday 8 AM - 6PM only) and email support, but while Hetzner's positives are great, support does appear to be on a decline. My initial emails used to take up to 2 days to get a response, and therefore I did end up reaching out to them through their Facebook page. With their reputation and age in the business, I did find myself expecting more when it comes to support, to be honest.

Hetzner has well-designed offerings with fantastic uptime and security and they are using high-grade hardware, but they don't have any type of support, which is a huge red flag for me. If you are not in Germany and in the process of looking for a new provider there is probably better options.

Elizaveta KudelyaCheap and cheerful. There are stories on the Internet about the loss of data and bad HDD, but personally we have not seen this. We have been using this hosting for more than 5 years, during this time, more than 15 bare metal servers were launched, mainly with virtualization based on https://www.proxmox.com/en/proxmox-veSupport answers in 1-2 hours via tickets. We've been trying to call but our attempts weren't successful.There are interruptions in the network, but rarely, about 1-2 times per year for 15 minutes.There is an external firewall. Company declared anti-DDoS, but we did not check it in practice.Uriah Moises GomesAccount rejected without explanation - No transparency whatsoever.I attempted to open an account with Hetzner as a freelance web developer managing over 200 domains and server infrastructure for my clients. I was seriously considering Hetzner as my primary hosting provider.The result? My account was rejected citing "suspicious information" - but they absolutely refuse to specify what information raised concerns or what I could do to address it.Their Customer Data Analytics team sent a generic response stating they "do not share details about why certain accounts appear suspicious." I have been a paying customer of Hetzner for over a year, using their dedicated servers for my business. Suddenly, without any prior warning, Hetzner terminated my account and shut down all my servers, resulting in the loss of my critical business and client data. I contacted them multiple times via email and phone, requesting access to my backups or a temporary reactivation so I could migrate my data, but they refused to cooperate. I have now filed a GDPR complaint against them for refusing to provide access to my personal data. I recommend them.Cosmin MoreanuCustomer support is always quick to fix the issue and friendly.The biggest disadvantage is the huge setup fee. They also use self built servers (non-branded like HPE or Dell) which sometimes can cause reliability issues. The speed is alright but overall I wouldn't recommend due to pricing, no 24/7 KVM and reliability issues.Michal BrichacekI have had an absolutely terrible experience with this company. I used their services for a short period of time, then decided to close my account. I was not informed of any outstanding balances before doing so. The next day I was sent an invoice for €7.54. The invoice states that the payment is due by PayPal. I only signed up for this company because they advertise as accepting payment by PayPal. When I click the link to pay the invoice however, it does not let me do so as my account is closed.The “support” team has been rude and absolutely unhelpful. They have informed me that I am unable to pay by PayPal because I closed my account. I have asked them to reinstate my account so that I can pay my invoice. They refuse to do this because my account has an outstanding balance. One of their e-mails to me stated the following:“As the account is disabled already, you have to make a bank transfer. There is no other option, and it's not our problem, you deleted your account, so disbaled it, before paying the invoice.”It’s not their problem? Are you serious? When I closed my account it didn’t show me an outstanding invoice. It didn’t give me any option to pay. I closed my account on March 31st at 12:02 PM. I was sent an invoice on April 1st at 4:14 AM. It seems to me like the problem is the way they run their system.They insist that I send an international wire transfer for €7.54 to them. I have repeatedly refused to send an international wire transfer where the fee to do so will cost me three or four times what I owe. After all, they clearly advertise that they accept PayPal.I have on multiple occasions offered to pay by credit card. I have also asked them for an e-mail address that I can simply send a PayPal payment to. They have refused both of these and insist that I send them a wire transfer. They are threatening to send me to a collections agency if I do not do so. This behavior borders on extortion. I am actually trying to pay my invoice, but they are NOT giving me a reasonable way to do so.Again when I asked to pay for PayPal, one of their replies states the following:“you don't have the option to do that as YOU deleted the account.”My last four e-mails to them asking them for a PayPal address to send payment to have been completely ignored. I suspect they will soon send me to a collections agency (as they have directly told me they will do this) for not paying my invoice, which I have repeatedly attempted to pay. The problem comes in when something goes wrong, I have had trouble getting hold of support but it could also very well be that they were swamped with support calls because of the servers being down but that being said I feel you should have enough staff on hand to deal with all customers without them having to wait. Actually a lot of things is possible to do from it.I had 5 dedicated servers in one company, and a little bit later High Availability solution with 3 dedicated servers. I have one dedicated server for my personal use. Never had any issues with hardware, availability or network. Servers just work!I have no complaints, support isn't that great but I don't really need it. The panel is spectacular and friendly unlike many other hosting companies and the entire experience with Hetzner is more then fun.Mladen JevticI am using Hetzner services for almost two years. The main reason for staying with them is the price. Unbeatable prices, period. But that has its disadvantages, of course, which is a lack of support for non-managed servers. They do have basic support via Emails, and they are providing it only during their working hours. But those non-managed offers are if you know how to do what you want to do. Once you setup your VPS instance, it is working like a charm.The server response is great, no lags. They are changing their pretty old user interface to a modern one, very nice and easy to use.Registering domain via them is still a little bit "tricky", but nothing hard.So far, I am satisfied with their services.
