First impression

uHostAfrica is a web hosting provider founded in 2012 by Theo Magaya and Chris Zimbowora in Pretoria, South Africa. They offer domain registrations, shared hosting, VPS servers, and additional services like web design and SEO. With servers strategically located in two data centers, Cape Town, South Africa, and Manchester, UK, they deliver faster load times and reliable uptime for both regional businesses and international clients.

Trial Period

This provider operates on a commitment-first model, requiring customers to purchase services upfront as they do not offer any free trial periods. However, they back their offerings with a transparent 30-day money-back guarantee (detailed on their Refund Policy page), allowing clients to request a full refund if services fail to meet expectations within the first month. So while you can't test-drive their hosting, the refund policy provides a safety net for incompatible or underperforming solutions. It is worth mentioning that products such as domain registrations and SSL certificates are not covered by this policy.

Billing Cycle

Their VPS plans are only available on a monthly billing cycle with no long-term commitments, which is great if you only need the server for a short period or just want to test the waters. But if you’re going for shared hosting, you’ve got two options - pay month-to-month or take advantage of a 20% discount by paying annually. Honestly, the yearly deal’s worth it if you know what you're in for, and are familiar with their level of service, but just keep in mind that there are no free trials, so you’re committing blindly (although with their 30-day refund policy, there is a bit of a safety net).

They currently accept payments via PayPal, Stripe, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover cards.

Control Panel

uHostAfrica keeps it simple with bundling all their shared hosting plans with the cPanel control panel, so you get that familiar, user-friendly dashboard to manage your site, emails, and databases. If you’re on one of their VPS plans, however, you’ll have full root access to install whatever control panel you prefer, or you can purchase cPanel from them at an additional fee.

Limits

uHostAfrica's shared hosting plans, all running on lightning-fast SSD storage and in a shared resources environment, come in four budget-friendly options to choose from. These range from 2GB SSD disc space, 1 MySQL database, and 10x 10GB POP/IMAP email accounts on the 'Beryl', their entry-level shared hosting plan, right up to unlimited SSD storage, MySQL databases, and POP/IMAP email accounts on the 'Tanzanite' plan, their top-tier option. All plans come standard with a free wildcard SSL certificate, daily backups, complimentary CDN (content delivery network), and a 99.9% uptime guarantee. Their website can be a bit confusing, though, as they state one can choose both Linux and Windows-based plans, but in reality, they only offer Linux-based shared hosting.

In similar fashion, their VPS plans also comes in various scalable plans to choose from, starting with 2 vCore CPUs, 2GB RAM, and 50GB SSD disc space on the '2 Core Managed VPS' plan, up to 12 vCore CPU's 64GB RAM, and 800GB SSD storage space on the '12 Core Managed VPS' plan. Unlike their well-priced shared hosting plans, these are rather costly compared to what other providers offer.

Website Builder

uHostAfrica doesn't include a dedicated drag-and-drop website builder with any of their hosting plans, but through one-click installations of industry-leading CMS platforms like WordPress, OpenCart, and Joomla via Softaculous, users can get access to all the tools necessary to build a professional-looking website quickly and without coding know-how. These pre-configured installations come with full access to themes, plugins, and editors (like Elementor for WordPress). For users seeking hands-off solutions, they complement this with managed WordPress web design services, where their team handles custom development.

Security

The security measures they claim to have in place pack serious security muscle, perfect if you want ‘set-and-forget’ protection without becoming a cybersecurity expert. All plans come standard with a 1 TBps+ DDoS attack protection to keep your site up during flooding attacks, a WAF (web application firewall) that blocks sketchy SQL injections and XSS attacks, and an automated malware scanner. For hands-on users, there’s IP/country blocking, hotlink protection, as well as 2FA and brute force protection too.

They also list "One-Click G Suite Setup" under their security, which might be an error, as it's merely a streamlined process that lets you quickly connect your domain to Google Workspace (formerly G Suite), and not a security feature.

OS

All their shared hosting plans run on the CloudLinux operating system (OS), which has become the backbone of reliable shared hosting, as it offers a purpose-built solution for providers needing stability and security in multi-tenant environments. Its Lightweight Virtualized Environment (LVE) technology actively allocates and enforces resource limits per account, preventing any single user from monopolizing CPU, RAM, or I/O - effectively eliminating the "noisy neighbor" problem that plagues traditional shared hosting setups. For their VPS plans, customers can choose between CentOS or Ubuntu. No Windows options, unfortunately.

Support

In my view, good support should be right up there with good security when it comes to providing hosting, and sadly, this is the area where things fall apart drastically for uHostAfrica. They claim there is 24/7 support available and that users can get hold of them via support tickets or WhatsApp should they need assistance. I have tried both channels (multiple times), and a couple of days later, I am still waiting for a response.

Conclusion

Pros Cons
  • Free SSL Certificates;
  • Budget-Friendly Shared Hosting.
  • No Free Trial Period;
  • Poor Support.

Is uHostAfrica worth considering? In my opinion, they struggle to meet basic expectations for reliable hosting, primarily due to glaring gaps in customer support and infrastructure flexibility. Despite advertising 24/7 assistance, their support system is effectively non-functional - tickets go unanswered for days, and live channels like WhatsApp yield only automated replies, leaving critical issues unresolved. Their VPS offerings compound these frustrations with restrictive limitations: no Windows Server options, forcing users to either self-manage Linux environments or abandon Microsoft-dependent applications entirely. Even for Linux users, the OS choices are surprisingly sparse (typically just Ubuntu or CentOS), and the absence of pre-installed free control panels like Webmin or CyberPanel means additional setup hurdles. Rather, shop around before making a commitment.
