First impression

Axxess is a South African internet services provider (ISP) that was founded back in 1997 by Franco Barbalich from his one-bedroom flat, and was originally named Axxess Africa. The company quickly grew from its humble beginnings and is currently one of the country's largest privately owned ISPs. They offer a range of services including domain registrations, shared hosting, VPS hosting, internet connectivity (5G, LTE, Fibre), as well as VOIP and email solutions.

Trial Period

Unfortunately, this provider requires full commitment right from the start, as they do not provide free trials, nor do they have a money-back guarantee. So there is no option to test their services and make sure they are what you are after before committing, and once signed up, refunds are not available.

Billing Cycle

Axxess keeps things as straightforward as possible when it comes to billing. All their shared hosting, VPS servers, email solutions, and even internet connections are billed month to month, so even though there is no free trial or money-back guarantee, you don't stand to lose much should they not live up to your expectations.

They currently only accept payments via credit and debit cards.

Control Panel

Their shared hosting plans come with the DirectAdmin control panel as standard, as well as an option to upgrade to cPanel for a small fee (only R15pm at the time of writing), and as their cPanel option also includes Imunify360 and KernelCare, which really makes it a no-brainer. For VPS plans, there are a bit more choices as users can choose between cPanel, Webuzo, or even InterWorx. Unlike most control panels that just offer click-and-go functions, InterWorx stands out with intelligent automation that adapts to your business workflows.

Limits

Axxess provides a range of shared hosting plans, all running on fast SSD storage, where resources such as RAM, SSD disk space, and bandwidth are shared among users. Their entry-level XS plan starts with 2GB SSD storage, 5 MySQL databases, and 75 POP/IMAP email accounts, while on the other end of the spectrum, the XXL plan offers 75GB SSD space with unlimited databases and POP/IMAP email accounts. Unlike many competitors, there's one notable restriction – you can't host multiple domains on these plans since add-on domains aren't supported.

For those needing more power, their VPS solutions start with the Standard configuration featuring 1 vCPU, 1GB RAM, and 50GB SSD space, scaling all the way up to the Ultra Plus tier with 16 vCPUs, 32GB RAM, and a generous 1.5TB of SSD storage. The nice part about their VPS offerings is the flexibility, as you can easily add extra CPUs, RAM, or storage to tailor the server exactly to your own specific requirements. Whether you're looking for basic shared hosting or a customizable virtual server, Axxess has structured options to suit different needs and budgets.

Website Builder

Axxess bundles the SitePad website builder with both their shared hosting and VPS plans. If you are not familiar with SitePad, it is a very popular and user-friendly, drag-and-drop website builder designed for beginners and pros alike. Unlike clunky platforms that drown you in complexity, SitePad keeps it simple. You just pick elements, customize them, and publish with one click. It comes packed with pre-designed templates, AI-powered tools, and built-in SEO features, so you don’t need coding skills to create sleek, fast-loading sites.

These plans also come with the Softaculous app, which lets you install popular CMSs such as WordPress or Joomla with a single click, should you prefer to build your site with a content management system.

Security

This provider has some solid security features in place. Their infrastructure is protected by strict firewalls with 24/7 network monitoring to catch threats in real-time. Every shared hosting plan comes with automatic SSL encryption, anti-spam filters, and malware scanners, and they've implemented hardened security like ModSecurity for web application protection and CageFS to jail users in isolated environments to prevent cross-account breaches. Even symlink attacks get blocked at the kernel level. For physical safety, their data centers combine UPS battery backups with industrial generators, ensuring your sites stay online through power outages.

They also beef up their VPS security with Imunify360 and ImunifyAV+. Imunify360 combines a smart firewall, real-time malware scanning, and automated patching to seal vulnerabilities before hackers can exploit them. It even blocks brute-force attacks automatically, while ImunifyAV+ adds an extra layer of deep server scanning, hunting down hidden malware with behavior analysis that catches what traditional scanners miss. Excellent security all round!

OS

Axxess shared hosting plans come standard with the CloudLinux operating system (OS), estimated to power more than 35% of cPanel-friendly hosting servers worldwide and best known for isolating users from one another on shared hosting servers through its Lightweight Virtualized Environment (LVE) technology. Their VPS plans, on the other hand, offer users a choice between AlmaLinux, CentOS, Debian, Fedora, Rocky Linux, OpenSUSE, or the Ubuntu OS, a decent range that should suit most needs.

Support

Their friendly yet professional support team is available 24/7 by phone, WhatsApp, or email. For urgent issues, I recommend calling or messaging them on WhatsApp as responses are instant. Email replies typically take around 3 hours on average in my experience, which might be too slow for time-sensitive problems. Overall, solid support!

Conclusion

Pros Cons
  • Good Support;
  • Free Domains on Selected Plans;
  • Free SSL Certificates.
  • No Free Trial Period;
  • cPanel Costs Extra.

In my opinion, Axxess is a solid hosting option for South African businesses and personal sites needing reliable, no-fuss hosting with good support. Their shared hosting plans work well for bloggers, small businesses, or anyone who wants an affordable and well-structured setup, but power users or those targeting overseas traffic might find it limiting.
