First impression

Mireene is a South Korean web hosting company that was founded in 2004. The Guro-gu, Seoul-based web hosting company was later taken over by LX Holdings Corp., which is a holding company and a subsidiary of LG International investment company. Mireene offers a wide array of hosting solutions, including Linux SSD hosting, colocation hosting, email, blog hosting, shopping mall hosting (eCommerce), domain name registration, and cloud solutions.

Trial Period

They offer a 7-day trial on their shared hosting plans, a good way to dip your toes in the water before diving in. On your trial, you're only allowed 3GB of data transfer per day - enough to start with but not enough to get too carried away. Warning, though, they don't tolerate abuse. Get caught being naughty or illegal, and your trial will be cut short faster than you can say "free hosting." Refund-wise, overseas customers should note that they require prepayment, and refunds are only issued if there's a good reason.

Billing Cycle

Mireene is accommodating with their billing cycles - at least, with their local customers. If you’re Korea-based, you have the option of contract lengths of 1, 3, 6, or 12 months for shared hosting and VPS, so you can scale your commitment level to your needs. But if you’re an international user, life is a tad easier (or more limited, depending on your outlook), with only the annual option open to you. On the plus side, discounts are graduated by contract term, so the longer you commit for, the more you could save.

They now accept payment by most of the major credit cards, including Visa and MasterCard, and PayPal.

Control Panel

This host goes back in time with their hosting packages, at least as far as control panels, or the absence thereof. With their shared hosting packages, you will not get a dedicated control panel with them, which might come as a shock to some users. Instead, if you need some help with something, you have to call their Live Chat (although keep in mind that it’s Korean only), or email if you’re English. With their VPS packages, they offer you full root access, giving the control to you to install your panel of choice. 

Limits

Their Shared Hosting plans, available only in Linux, have four configurations from a meager 500MB SSD disk space, and 100MB MariaDB space in their first plan, which is only suitable for extremely basic static sites only, up to 8GB SSD storage, and 2GB MariaDB database space in their highest plan.

VPS plans range from 1 vCPU, 2GB of RAM, and 30GB SSD space on the Economic plan, up to 8 vCPUs, 16GB of RAM, and 150GB of SSD space on the Advanced plan.

Website Builder

This Korean host doesn’t have a flashy, standalone website builder in their offerings, but they make up for this by having WordPress pre-installed by default. And if WordPress isn’t your thing, other open-source platforms such as Drupal or Joomla can be installed for you as an alternative. With these CMSs (Content Management Systems) you can create anything from simple blogs to fully-fledged e-commerce sites, thanks to its gigantic library of themes and plugins. While it might not be the drag-and-drop one-stop-shop some would like, it’s perfect for anyone already familiar with these popular platforms.

Security

Mireene keeps it solid and simple with the security options they offer. They've got the basics covered, with firewalls, daily backups, and DDoS protection built into their hosting plans, which is always a welcome thing. They also employ some good anti-malware software to keep your site safe from day-to-day threats. I did notice some holes, though - there's no mention of more advanced security options such as intrusion detection systems or two-factor authentication to add an extra layer of login security. As an added layer of reassurance, they do offer SSL certificates, which I believe are necessary to encrypt data and allow your visitors to trust you. On that note, I believe firmly that providers nowadays should at least offer basic SSL certificates, such as those from Let's Encrypt, for free. Their security options are good, but a bit more clarity and a few more options wouldn't be out of place.

OS

On the OS side, they include CentOS 4 and CentOS 6 with PHP 5.6, and more modern setups like CentOS 7 with PHP versions from 7.0.3 up to 7.4, with respective MariaDB upgrades. If you are an Ubuntu fan, you get the latest 22.04 version with PHP 8.0 or 8.2 and MariaDB 10.6 to choose from. Their shared hosting defaults to CentOS 7, but if you prefer to have Ubuntu, just ask, and they will switch it for you free of charge.

Support

They make it easy to support with two main channels - Live Chat for Korean language speakers and Email support for English language speakers. The Live Chat facility is the fastest, usually providing near instant responses within business hours, ideal if you’re Korean fluent and in a hurry for assistance. For international customers by email, response times are unknown but usually within 24 hours. While they do not have a ticket system or phone support, their support staff are responsive, polite, and focused on solving issues efficiently within the scope of their services. But the lack of live chat support in English might leave some international customers a bit under-supported.

Conclusion

My opinion is that Mireene is a good choice for Korean local users, especially small companies or developers who are not opposed to a DIY solution and can handle their Live Chat in Korean for immediate support. Their shared hosting packages are affordable and sufficient for minimal websites, and the VPS packages offer plenty of flexibility for advanced users who like to have total control. But if you are an international user or a beginner user who wants ease of use features like a website builder or an easy control panel, then Mireene is not suitable. On top of that, is the issue of the language barrier unless you are willing to wait for email support.
