How to transfer your domain to someone safely?
If you want to transfer domain ownership to a person or company, there are two possible options:
1. Transfer within the same Registrar
The purchasing party has an account with the same registrar that the domain seller registered it with. There should be no issues with the transfer in such a case. The domain seller will need to follow the instructions on the registrar’s website and obtain the purchasing party’s account credentials.
2. Transferring out to a different Registrar
The buyer has an account with a different registrar and wants for the domain to be transferred there. It is a standard procedure but requires taking some steps:
- Firstly, the seller should inform the current registrar that he intends to transfer the domain to a different registrar. Usually, this assumes contacting registrar support via chat or ticket.
- The current registrar provides the domain holder with transfer code (EPP code, Authorization code or AuthInfo password).
- There are a couple of options: changing the domain contacts to the ones of a new holder before transfer (actual for most ccTLDs), transferring the domain to a new holder without changing contacts (for most gTLDs), creating an account at the acquiring registrar registrar’s website with your credentials and transferring the domain between accounts within one registrar.
- The seller either provides the new domain holder with the transfer code and the buyer submits an order for domain transfer or transfers his domain to the new registrar and afterward transfers it between accounts. Note! The domain transfer procedure takes 5-14 days.
- If you did not change the domain contacts, you will need to confirm the transfer. Click the corresponding link in the email you will receive from your current registrar. If the contacts were changed, the new domain holder will receive the email. You might want to remind him to confirm the transfer.
Note! The following conditions must be met in order to transfer a domain out to a different registrar:
- it has been at least 60 days since the date of the domain registration;
- privacy protection services are off;
- domain registrant’s email hasn’t changed in 60 days.
