What types of domains are there?

There are three basic domain types: top-level domains (TLDs) e.g. ‘.biz’ second-level domains (SLDs) e.g. ‘.biz.us’ and lower-level domains. Usually, each domain type is managed by a single Registry. TLDs are assigned according to the country or purpose the domain is being created for (.biz – for business, .us – for the USA, etc.). They are divided into generic (gTLD) and country-code (ccTLD) respectively.

Certain domain TLDs have special registration requirements. Country-code TLDs (ccTLD) often require citizenship or/and a registered trademark in the specific country. Some gTLDs require providing paperwork that proves your company is related to certain business areas (.aero, .xxx, .fm, etc). For example: to register a .SG domain you would have to be an individual or own a company with an office or legal agent in Singapore. Registration of .COM.SG domain assumes even more restrictions. Only a Singaporean company or business/entity that owns a company with an office or legal agent in Singapore can register this TLD. On top of that, you will have to go through a verification process with the domain Registry (SGNIC).

It is typical for ccTLDs to have stricter registration requirements than the gTLDs.
