First impression

Fasthosts is a seasoned and trusted hosting provider based in Gloucester, in the South Western part of the UK, that's been around since 1998. Back then, a 17 year old A-Level student named Andrew Michael couldn't find a suitable, cost-effective, and reliable hosting service to support his IT project, so he decided to create his own - and Fasthosts was born.

They power more than 320,000+ websites and 10,000+ servers from their own, purpose-built "green" data centers, all of which are ISO 27001 certified for security and ISO 50001 for power management. Apart from being a popular domain registrar, they offer a range of hosting solutions, including Shared Hosting, VPS Hosting, and Dedicated Server Hosting, and in 2019 they became the first UK provider of Microsoft Exchange 2019 emails.

Signing up with Fasthosts is fast and hassle-free, and new customers will receive a free domain name, free migration, and a complimentary SSL certificate on most plans.

Trial Period

Fasthosts offers a 30-day money-back guarantee on their Shared Hosting. Customers can also take advantage of a 1-month free trial on their Online marketing tools.

Billing Cycle

They offer affordable hosting plans that are billed monthly or annually and are subject to a 12-month contract. VPS clients can also take advantage of discounted rates of 5% on a 24-month term, or 10% on a 36-month, term should they commit for longer.

Fasthosts accepts all major credit cards and PayPal as payment methods.

Control Panel

Fasthosts Shared Hosting comes standard with their own, award-winning Control Panel, from where customers can easily manage their sites, domain names, email mailboxes, and servers, as well as their account details. For VPS and Dedicated Server Hosting, users will have Plesk.

Limits

There are four options to choose from on their Shared Hosting plans, namely Start, Grow, Scale, and Pro. Their entry-level plan comes dirt cheap initially. They will only bill you 50p for the first 6 months and after that, the price drastically increases to £5 per month. This plan will give you a free domain name, 100GB SSD storage with 15 databases, and a single email address. Grow will give users 2x free domains, 250GB SSD space as well as a free 1-year SSL certificate, whilst Scale and Pro come bundled with 3x domains, 350GB SSD space, 3x Lifetime SSL certificates, and 5x free domains, 500GB SSD space, 5x lifetime SSL certificates respectively.

Their VPS Hosting has various options, that range from 2 vCPU, 2GB RAM with 80GB SSD space on the VPS M plan, all the way up to 8 vCPU, 24GB RAM with 240GB SSD space on the VPS XXL RAM package.

All plans come standard with unlimited bandwidth and a promise of 99.999% server uptime.

Website builder

Fasthosts has their own website builder that customers can use free of charge for the first month. For the most part it is a “drag and drop” builder that comes with a wide array of templates that is easy to customize without any coding or technical knowledge.

Security

Fasthosts will include a free SSL certificate with their Grow, Scale, and Pro Shared Hosting packages, but unfortunately, you will need to pay extra for Antivirus and Anti-Malware protection, a feature I feel should come standard in this day and age. This is only included in the backup plans that will set you back an additional £7.00 ex VAT per month for 50GB.

VPS plans come bundled with a customizable firewall, DDoS protection, a complimentary 256-bit SSL certificate, as well as a 2GB free Cyber Protect Basic backup solution powered by Acronis.

Their data centers, all UK based, are ISO 27001 certified and all Fasthosts accounts are protected by 2FA as an extra layer of protection.

OS

On the Fasthosts Shared Hosting packages, customers will have the option to choose between Windows or Linux operating systems. As for their VPS or dedicated servers, Linux-based operating systems like CentOs7, Ubuntu 20.04 / 22.04, Debian 10/11, Alma Linux OS 8, or Rocky Linux 8, are available for free of charge, but Windows Operating Systems will cost you extra.

Support

Their experts are on hand 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, should you run into any problems and need technical assistance. Most TrustPilot reviews rave about their excellent support, although it felt pretty average to me. Help is available 24/7 by phone, as well as a ticketing system and live chat, which is only available from Monday to Friday between 09.00 AM and 08.00 PM GMT, and customers will generally get a quick reply back from them - less than a minute in my case.

6-thumb.jpg

Fasthosts resellers will have their own designated support site through their own reseller control panel.

Customers can also check the System Status on their website for any updates on known issues or outages.

Conclusion

Pros Cons
  • Free SSL;
  • 30-day money-back guarantee;
  • Free domain on most plans.
  • No monthly payment option on shared hosting;
  • No free backups on Shared Hosting;
  • Antivirus & Anti-Malware protection will cost extra.

If your targeting audience is based in the UK or Europe, and you are looking for a new hosting provider that is reliable, then Fasthosts should be on top of your list. They offer flexible hosting plans, that are not only scalable, but also blazing fast, and one can probably overlook the fact that live chat is limited to certain hours of the day. In my opinion, Fasthosts is a great choice for beginners and small companies, but for bigger institutions, there might be better options out there.

Lorienz GalarpeI've experience using fasthost in one my freelance clients website before using with their wordpress hosting service. Used to build an online petshop professional website with ecommerce function, so far the hosting server is good and can handle the page loads, payload requests, ecommerce function and online transactions. There is no downtime report so far I get from my client and that's a good thing. The best part also is that they include a lifetime free SSL certificate and is automatically installed when you install wordpress site with your own domain name as SSL certs usually cost around $10-1000 each. They also have live tech support 24/7 but I don't have experience contacting their live tech support yet as of now. Pricing is reasonable as their server hosting is great so far.Burkay YapagciogluI didn't realize there was a 12-month contract when I purchased the service. When I tried to cancel after 3 months, I was told I’m locked into the contract and they will continue charging £7 every month — even though I haven’t used the service at all. The first 3 months were just £2, but now I’m stuck paying £7/month for something I don’t even use. Getting support is also incredibly difficult. You're constantly being passed from one department to another, and no one seems able to offer a clear solution. Would not recommend at all.Shakeel AhmedI have recently used Fasthosts to upload my client’s website and It took me only few minutes to install wordpress and upload website. The client dashboard was secured but file manager was not available so I struggled to edit some file online. Free and quickly installs the SSL. I have not got chance to contact with their support team because the website was working fine. It's really easy and simple to use and I would recommend it if you want set-up your own site.Kamran HamidOnce hosted a client’s business website with Fasthosts, and since then, I have been awed by its high-grade performance and great tech experience. The prices are very competitive and offer excellent value for money-especially for bulk hosting. I am pretty satisfied with the user interface, which is easily laid out and simple to navigate. The website loads quickly, even with high traffic. Choosing Fasthosts has been a great decision. The only thing that bugs me about this hosting provider is its customer support. If you are too lucky, they might reply to you on live chat; otherwise, you have to call them. Rest, I am very happy with their services.Scott RigbyI found fasthosts to be excellent value for bulk hosting. I used fasthosts with Wordpress, Opencart and Magento installations, Magento I found to run a little slow but fasthosts easily handled the opencart and wordpress installations no problem. Once issue I found with fasthosts was their support, nowhere near as quick as some smaller hosts which was disappointing, but at the price point I think it's only fair. I have a fair bit of tech experience so never really had to rely on their support, but for a less tech savvy user I would consider that as a con.Overall a good solid service which I would gladly use againPhil RobinsWe used fasthosts to host an ecommerce site, but found as we added a lot of pages, the shared nature of the hosting package we chose made the pages load too slowly. We moved to a dedicated VPS and this resolved our problem - you need power, you have to pay for it is the lesson with any host.Fasthosts advised us to go down this route and it helped a lot.We have also used them for smaller sites and that all worked well, I particularly like the ecommerce hosting option, as lots of customers are now looking at setting up dropshipping sites - this gives it to you off the shelf.Michael ChappellUsed Fast Hosts when i was part of a larger company a while ago and at first I was a bit unsure but the tech support and the management of the account was second to none. Very impressed and to be Honest its not like I needed loads of support as both the uptime and things like the TTL was super quick. Corporate level packages at a small business price. Thank youHayden SweetFor me the most expensive hosting provider i have used this helping my customers setup there websites and if you want control of the control panels then its not for you, I have struggled to use SSH and FTP with this provider. But i wouldnt now rule this out for the type of user that isnt clued up with hosting.Jordan DoneganAlthough I used FastHosts originally many years ago, they seem to have improved greatly. Their pricing is very competitive and both their site and control panel are much easier to use. Their support is also very helpful at guiding you and resolving any issues - I needed to update some nameservers for a client and they were very responsive and eager to help me.Kevinson LibamaFasthosts.co.uk has great features that made me like it. First, is the Traffic Driver SEO tool that solves one of the problems most webmasters face: getting traffic and ranking in search engines. The host has good bandwidth too (10 GB disk space), which translates to faster loading times. I started noticing a spike in traffic and reduce bounce rate after switching to this hosting provider.And I noticed they have a custom 404 error page, which allowed me to redirect users to a different link with relevant content to what they're searching for. Not many hosts have such a powerful feature.It's not all rosy with Fasthosts, though. They don't provide a free SSL certificate. That's a huge miss for this company given that Google labels sites without "https" as insecure. Other than that, this host is good overall.Anthony WalkerI used these guys for years to host a dedicated server and found them to be very good. We only had one issue with downtime, their support kept us informed all the way. Fast network. Reasonable pricing (probably better if your paying in GBP) and quick support. They have won a few awards and grown a big client base organically which is a good sign.Nathan KerridgeFasthost.co.uk have been providing hosting in the UK for 20 years, their pricing is very competitive. They offer optimised Wordpress hosting, that includes a free SSL certificate for one year, as well as a domain name registration free for one year (this includes .com domains) The user interface is nicely laid out and clear and simple to navigate around. They have a very helpful support team, and are quick to respond to tickets. Page speed load times are very good within the UK, and the have servers in several UK data centres.Overall a reasonable webhost.
